Although the original hardpoints were OK, they didn't really reflect the TOS episode "Balance of Terror" as well as I'd have liked in BC. So I've altered the files slightly to make a quick battle between these two ships as much like the episode action sequence as it is possible for Bridge Commander to do.
Note that the hardpoints are balanced for your helmsman piloting the ship, rather than you doing so manually. If you fly manually, then the battle may be too easy for you against the AI - but that's the case with any BC ships, not just these two.
- Constitution phasers beam duration reduced - BoP shield recharge rate (but not strength) reduced by 2/3rds as shields were too strong
REBALANCED HARDPOINTS #1 - "BALANCE OF TERROR" v3 --------------------------------------------------------- Author: tssmith Mod Name: Rebalanced Hardpoints #1 - "Balance of Terror" Description: Canon and balanced hardpoints for TOS Constitution and Romulan Bird-Of-Prey Version: v3 Change History: v1 original v2 Constitution phasers beam duration reduced. v3 BoP shield recharge rate (but not strength) reduced by 2/3rds as shields were too strong - that energy is used to charge plasma torpedo. Programs used: Notepad Total Build Time: 1 hour editing, 6 hours of playtesting New SFX: No New GFX: No Original Hardpoints by Anduril and Kevo Plasma Torpedo by Dante/Admiral Ames (Originally from the pre-TOS warbird) --------------------------------------------------- This mod is merely a set of rebalanced hardpoint files (HP's) for Anduril's TOS Constitution, and PiperTheGreat's TOS Romulan BoP. (I've also included files for Kevo's Romulan BoP, an older mod from 2002, in case people prefer that version.) Included are projectile files. As for the ships, Anduril's TOS Constitution has slightly weaker shields than before and the phasers fire in much shorter bursts, closer to what was seen in the TV series. The ship was overpowered before, actually as powerful as the TMP era NCC 1701-A. PipexTheGreat's (and Kevo's) Romulan Bird of Prey is significantly altered to make it more canon and better balanced against the Constitution. First, the disruptors have been removed, so that the ship's only weapon is the plasma torpedo. (In the TOS episode Balance of Terror, the Romulan ship was never seen to fire disruptors or any other secondary weapon, and according to www.ditl.org it doesn't have any. I don't really count the dropped nuclear warhead as a genuine secondary weapon, it was only meant for self-destruction.) However, worry not - the plasma torpedo is now FAR more powerful than in the original file - the damage is equivalent to 20 TOS-era proton torpedoes(!) (This damage level was taken from the www.ditl.org estimate of the power of the plasma warhead.) It can, if it hits just right, destroy the TOS Constitution outright. The warhead is very slow by BC standards, but extremely difficult to evade - hopefully you'll experience the tension in the original episode as it gradually homes in on you! The downside (for the Romulans) is that the torpedo launcher takes a VERY long time to reload (each torpedo has to be charged with plasma from the engine nacelles, which takes time.) Despite that, the immense power of the warhead means that the BoP shouldn't really need any secondary weapons anymore. Since in BC the AI doesn't make effective use of cloak (e.g. waiting for the torpedo to finish reloading before decloaking), I've had to beef up the BoP's shields to compensate. The BoP is actually slightly larger than the Constitution, so its shield strength should be a bit better anyway. In the TOS episode, the BoP endured a long battering from the Enterprise's proximity blast weapons before being put out of action. So to prevent a quick victory by the Enterprise against a de-cloaked BoP, and ensure a good long battle, the BoP is now a slow, but very tough ship. Despite the long reload time, the BoP should have several opportunities to launch its plasma warhead at the Enterprise before its shields fail. The TOS Constitution can potentially survive several impacts of the plasma warhead, if it uses the correct tactics. (You'll have to find out what they are!) But for the ultimate challenge, try flying a weaker TOS ship like the Saladin or the Surya (TOS-era Miranda) against the BoP - the Romulan plasma torpedo WILL destroy these ships with one good hit. Flying the BoP yourself, you should be able to destroy a whole squadron of Federation ships if you're good enough and make good use of your cloaking device....the lack of any disruptors or beam weapons make it a very different and interesting ship to fly. Your tactics will be very similiar to those used in the actual TOS episode: Cloak, move into firing position, decloak, fire the plasma warhead, recloak, and wait until the torpedo reloads before decloaking again. However you don't have the energy to stay cloaked indefinitely... ---------------------- INSTALLATION ---------------------- Install the required mods below first, before doing anything else. Extract this zip file to a temporary folder of your choice, make sure you tick the 'folders' option. It'll create a 'scripts' folder in the location. Then drag and drop that 'scripts' folder to your main Bridge Commander folder. Click Yes when asked whether to overwrite files. If you're not asked to overwrite files, either you don't have the required ships installed, or you dragged it to the wrong place. Start again. ----------- REQUIRED MODS ----------- This mod REQUIRES: NanoFX2 (for blinkers) Anduril's TOS Constitution: http://bridgecommander.filefront.com/file/Andurils_TOS_Constitution_class_USS_Enterprise;5450 and either: PiperTheGreat's Romulan Bird of Prey: http://bridgecommander.filefront.com/file/TOS_Romulan_BoP;38688 or alternatively: Kevo's Romulan Bird of Prey: http://bridgecommander.filefront.com/file/TOS_Romulan_Bird_of_Pray;2129 -------------- CREDITS -------------- Anduril - TOS Constitution creator. PiperTheGreat - TOS Romulan BoP creator. Dante/Admiral Ames - Great realistic plasma torpedo hardpoint. Kevo - Original Romulan BoP hardpoint, and original Romulan Bird of Pray creator.
