First introduced in the early 2240s, the Constitution stayed a key part of Starfleet for several decades, even after other more modern vessels came into development. Around the time that the famous U. S. S. Enterprise finished her five year mission under the command of Captain James T. Kirk, Starfleet pegged the Constitutions for a complete redesign and overhaul. The first ship to undergo this extensive refit was the Enterprise, which, even though launched prematurely, helped fine tune the design changes and bring the refits to other ships in the fleet. The refit Constitution has very few similarities, outside of basic design layout, with the standard pre-refit versions. In addition to the new warp nacelles, restructured hull and saucer, and other structural changes, the refits are equipped with more powerful shields, newer photon torpedoes, and a revolutionary phaser redesign which draws power directly from the warp drive. With the advent of "X" technology, a number of Constitutions were upgraded with the new systems. New warp nacelles, increased power capacity, stronger shields, and new weapons boosted the capabilities of the starship, putting it on par with the rest of the X-Era designs. -------------------- Valiant During the Dominion War, Starfleet's losses in ships and personnel were staggering. Starfleet initiated various new programs to bring any and all possible ships up to modern day specifications. Noticing the potential of even the oldest retired hulls, engineers at Omega Sector Fleetyards put forth a proposal to bring the venerable Constitution class into the twenty-fourth century. At the request of the Omegan starship specialists, Starfleet pulled a Constitution out of mothballs and sent it to OSF for prototype testing. After a failed attempt at the refit (nearly costing the lives of the ship's crew), Omegan engineers stripped over fifty percent of the ship down and began anew. Six months prior to the end of the war, the U.S.S. Valiant completed a successful shakedown cruise and was then transferred to the Omegan Space Force to undergo field tests. Starfleet sent a second Connie to OSF to undergo the same refit which was sent back to the Federation for their own testing, while the schematics and design notes were sent out to various shipyards so more of these famed vessels could have new life breathed into them. The "Connie X" class sports a reinforced primary, fully upgraded impulse drive, a new FTL drive, ablative armor, and regenerative shields. Twelve pulse-fire phaser banks, three photon torpedo launchers (2 fore, 1 aft) and a medium yield quantum torpedo launcher round out the ship's armament. --------------------- Mark 4 Constitution Refit - USS Enterprise A In the early 2290's, the United Federation of Planets began peace talks with the Klingon Empire following the explosion of Praxis, one of the empire's key energy production facilities. As the peace talks began, factions from both sides conspired together to murder Chancellor Gorkon and prevent the formation of a peace treaty between the two governments. With the efforts of the crew of starships Enterprise-A and Excelsior, the renegade Klingons were defeated and the rogue Federation officers were arrested, along with other parties that had a hand in the conspiracy, and the peace talks continued. Suffering extreme battle damage, the Enterprise-A was called back to spacedock to be decommissioned. A little over 80 years later, the Dominion War brought on the need for more ships, since many ships had already been destroyed by the Dominion/Cardassian/Breen Alliance. Many older ships on the brink of retirement were kept in service and given refits to enhance their combat abilities and survivability, and a general order was issued to bring any and all decommissioned ship hulls back into full service, refitted with the latest technology. One such ship hull that was brought back to life was the hull of the U.S.S. Enterprise, NCC-1701-A, and during the war, the Enterprise A, along with all of the recommissioned ships, served with honor and distinction, proving that they still have alot of life left in them. After the war, all of the major Alpha Quadrant powers began the tedious task of rebuilding. Having served proudly in the Dominion War, and having one of the most illustrious backgrounds in the fleet, the Enterprise-A was chosen by the ASDB (Advanced Starship Design Bureau) to become the testbed for new technologies to eventually be incorporated into all older ship classes. The experimental post-Dominion War refit of the Constitution class features a prototype, experimental hull armor based on Borg technology, and includes a Sovereign-based weapons system. If successful, the post-war refit would further enhance the service capabilities of all the older ships in the fleet, most notably in combat and scientific research capabilities. It is the hope of many people throughout the Federation that this new post-war refit program will help to keep all of these cherished ships in continued service well into the 25th century, alongside their modern counterparts. There have been rumors that once this new refit of the Constitution class is perfected, that all ships in the fleet based on the Constitution design will be given the same level of refits, but these rumors have yet to be confirmed. ---------------------- USS Republic After the successful refits of the Constitution class into the "Valiant" sub-type, Starfleet designated three of the Valiants for yet another refit. These postwar Connies were more extensive overhauls, incorporating the latest technologies and weapon systems. In addition, crew requirements were reduced to just under 200. The first of these upgrades, the Republic, and her sister ships were as successful as their predecessors, further extending the life of the venerable Constitution class. ---------------------- BCH Resurrection Class - U.S.S. Resurrection / U.S.S. Enterprise Mark 6 Constitution 25th Century Standard Refit As the years passed and the galaxy recovered from the destruction brought on by the devastation of the Dominion War, the resurrected Constitution Class served proudly and with distinction, filling vital roles in the fleet well into the dawn of the 25th century. In the early 2420's, some members of Starfleet Command felt that it was finally time to permanently retire all the Constitution Class starships, but key Starfleet officers realized that the Constitution Class still had much more to contribute. When the decision was made to keep the class in service, it was obvious that a refit was needed to keep the class up to date with the rest of the fleet. The U.S.S. Resurrection was ordered into spacedock to receive the first of these refits, which included newly designed warp engines, state-of-the-art phaser systems, and the new burst fire Quantum Torpedo systems, to name but a few. Every single system would be upgraded with state-of-the-art technology, and the ship's crew requirements would remain under 250. After her shakedown cruise was successfully completed, Starfleet ordered all remaining Constitution Class starships to immediately undergo refit to the new specifications, and the U.S.S. Enterprise-A was the second ship of the class to receieve these new refits. It is not yet known for how much longer this famed class of starship will remain in service, and it is believed that this will be the last refit of the class. However, what is known is that these starships will continue to serve proudly well into the next half century, and once they are finally retired, they will have left their mark in the galaxy, and in the pages of history. ---------------------- USS Reliant-B Shortly after the last of the Constitutions were refitted to the Mark 6 specifications, the U.S.S. Evermore, NCC-79843, was transferred to the 7th fleet and placed under the command of 7thOmega-1. Having had a life-long admiration of the famed Constitution-Class, 7thOmega-1 was more than shocked and pleased when his first command was a Constitution-Class ship. Although he had commented that this newly refitted ship was a sight to behold, he felt that something was now missing in her appearance. Having submitted requests through certain channels, 7thOmega-1 was able to send the Evermore back into spacedock for a minor refit, replacing the standard Mark 6 nacelles with replicas of the nacelles used on the old Mark 2 refit. 7thOmega-1 was able to obtain permission to rename the ship as he saw fit, and ordered the ship be renamed to the U.S.S. Reliant, NCC-1864-B. --------------------- Resurrection NX In the mid 23rd Century, Starfleet began its first attempt at developing transwarp technology. The U.S.S. Excelsior was created specifically to testbed the experimental transwarp drive technology. It was hoped that along with the Excelsior Class, that the transwarp drive would usher in a new era of exploration. Unfortunately, the transwarp drive never met these goals. Although the experimental transwarp drive was deemed a failure, Starfleet R&D made extraordinary technological breakthroughs in propulsion, warp field dynamics, power distribution and utilization, etc., but it would be some time before Starfleet would attempt transwarp again. To some degree, the transwarp project was never shutdown. Rather, research into transwarp continued slowly over the next century, but it wasn't until the Borg incursions, and then later with the return of the U.S.S. Voyager, did Starleet R&D begin to discover the flaws in the experimental transwarp drive. After spending the last 40 years in research, Starfleet finally authorized the construction of another transwarp drive. In 2426, the U.S.S. Resurrection had been involved in a minor Borg incursion on the border of the Beta Quadrant, and sustained heavy damage. Instead of decommissioning the Resurrection, Starfleet decided to rebuild her, to test the new experimental transwarp drive, and she has been equipped with additional phaser systems for added offensive and defensive capacity. As of yet, the experimental transwarp drive has not been tested at speeds faster than Warp 9.9995, but preliminary results have made Starfleet very hopeful that the transwarp barrier will be broken safely and successfully. ----------------------- U.S.S. Bellerophon - 24th Century Akula Refit - Dominion War Refit When first contact was made with the Dominion, Starfleet knew that it would only be a matter of time before they would have to defend themselves against the Dominion. With the destruction of the U.S.S Odyssey by the Jem'Hadar, Starfleet began a massive fleetwide refit/upgrade program, to give all ships currently in service an added boost in their combat capabilities, but some in Starfleet felt that this measure wouldn't be enough. Fearing that the efforts currently underway would not be enough to stand against a Jem'Hadar threat, Starfleet Command began looking into the possibility of reactivating the mothball fleet, and refitting them with current technology, inside and out, if the situation should arise where ships would be desperately needed. To test the feasability of bringing old ships back into full service, Starfleet selected an old Akula-Class starship to become a testbed for new technologies which will hopefully provide a viable means for reactivating and recommissioning old ships if the need should arise. The U.S.S. Bellerophon left spacedock 2 months before the official start of the Dominion War, and saw immediate action. Although problems with the new systems popped up, they were quickly dealt with, and Starfleet considered the Bellerophon a success, and issued a fleetwide reactivation order for all mothball ships. Although the Bellerophon was a success, and although there were plenty of mothballed Akula hulls, Starfleet ordered only a dozen more Akulas to be refitted. It was felt that the refitted Akulas couldn't provide the firepower necessary on the frontlines, and larger mothballed ships were selected instead. The systems developed for the Bellerophon were the basis for the technology that went into refitting the old Constitution-Class, beginning with the U.S.S. Valiant. I suggest you check back frequently in order to keep updated on the current policy status. Copies of the policy included with the files may not be as up-to-date as the one posted here. I have no problem with kitbashes/alterations as long as the following procedures are followed: 1.) Everyone involved with the kitbash/modification is to be credited. That includes the original model author(s), anyone involved with the design (if different from the modeler), and the person who created the alteration. This will set up a history of the modifications and give credit to all involved. 2.) If a ship is to be converted to another game (Bridge Commander, Armada, Klingon Academy, etc.) I prefer being notified of any alterations to my work as most times the credits are not listed properly, the ships aren't converted correctly, etc. 3.) If the ship is to be released to the public, no parts from a restricted model are to be used. Some modelers don't want their work to be altered and I would expect everyone to respect that. If there is a part or parts that are restricted, I can possibly create a replacement for you to use. 4.) If the ship is to be released to the public, I would ask that you contact me first. This is to make sure you have the proper credits listed and to make sure no restricted parts are being used. On some occasions people have credited me for work that I have never seen before. 5.) Please do not post these models on other websites (with the exception of mod/dynaverse downloads, kitbashes, and conversions to other games). I prefer keeping my ships on a single site so I can better control their distribution and make sure the correct files are updated. I know this sounds rather strict but it becomes a bit tedious when trying to update a ship and having to contact dozens of other websites to inform them of the changes as well. 6.) If I grant permission for alterations to a single model, that is not to be interpreted as a base acknowledgment for further alterations/conversions/kitbashes/etc. to any other ship that I have created. Approvals of alteration requests apply only to individual ships, not all of them at once unless otherwise stated in my response. 7.) All work on this site is property of the respective owners. If anyone attempts to steal or take credit for work they did not do, I will hunt you down and feed you to a pack of bloodthirsty wolves.
