A new design was thought up as a companion/ successor/ to the Sovereign Class deep space explorer. The Annapolis Class starship is larger in mass but shorter in length. The decision was made that this new starship design would be shorter than 685 meters. With advances in subspace-friendly warp technology, there was not a need to create long warp nacelles. Instead, advanced engineering focused on deflector control, shield matrixes and interior shield geometry.
The ship feels nice ingame but it has some bugs: torpedo tubes, warp nacelles, bridge and some other systems appear out of place when you target them. The hull and shields are weak for a brother of the Sovereign, but overall, an interesting addition to the fleet.

With advances in subspace-friendly warp technology, there was not a need to create long warp nacelles. Instead, advanced engineering focused on deflector control, shield matrixes and interior shield geometry. Annapolis class starships boast the utmost protection for its crew. During the confrontation between Romulus, Remus and the Federation, Starfleet's flagship Enterprise registry #NCC-1701-E suffered extreme damage from weapons fire and a ship to ship collision with the Reman warship Scimitar. Advanced engineering proposed that the new class of heavy cruisers were to have its technology focus on creating higher levels of structural integrity and a network of interior shield grids. With the potential threats of deep space exploration, Annaplis class starships have a new composite hull material made up of 30CM Ablative Armor. With the stronger material lining its outer hull, this new design bears no exterior windows. However, walking through the ship's interior corridors and staterooms, crew members will find view screens integrated into the walls. From within, the ship will appear to have windows to the outside. Each view screen will contain its own sensors, operational systems and power supplies. The interior shield matrix is new technology that is being tested in this new class of starship. With the exterior shield grids and deflectors still in place, there will be a new network of interior shield emitters installed along all inhabitable decks and then extend to vital areas of the ship were sensitive materials and equipment are kept. This system will help increase overall shield strength to repel potential threats, and also aid in increasing protection from unauthorized transporting to and from the ship. All transporter systems being installed in this new starship design will have special subsystems to account for the new interior shield geometry. Annapolis class starships also have modified weapon arrays to further protect itself during deep space assignments. The proposed Type X phaser banks that were installed on the previous class starships were removed from new design plans last minute with the introduction of the Type XI phaser banks. The new phasers have abilities to allow for consistant automatic rotation of settings, frequencies and itensity. The phasers allow faster bursts and longer concentration. Tests using these phasers on older shield technology have shown an increase of 64% in overall time needed for shield grid collapse. The older grids cannot compensate for the rapid changes so the overall system overloads. Improving overall longevity of the phasers' capabilities without increasing overall power is a benefit to starships traveling in deep space. The new phaser arcs are longer and comprise key portions of the hull. Photon torpedo technology is being halted for the change over to Quantum torpedoes. Annapolis class starships will carry 300 Type VI photorps, 450 Type V Qtorps and 25 Tri-Colbalt torpedoes. The new class of vessels will have four torpedo launchers forward and two launchers firing aft. Each rapid fire launcher can fire 2-4 torpedoes at once for a faster attack spread during combat. Warp technology has changed very little during the development of new starships. Mostly, warp technology has stayed optimal for years. With the development of subspace instability with older warp drives, the transition to subspace friendly warp engines was recognized. Instituted in the last class starship, subspace friendly warp drive was fairly new technology. Annapolis class starships have solved some warp drive issues by including more nacelles. The new nacelles are stacked with two modular warp pods on top of each other. Each pod is 40% more efficient than the previous generation warp engines so, having more nacelles will yield better performance. Since each pod takes less energy to operate, there is no drain on output from the new warp core. Annapolis class starships have thicker nacelle pylons to account for the extra mass. Also, modular warp engine design helps to create easier and quicker engine changes while in spacedock. Warp output increased 60% over previous class starships and now sustained speeds of Warp 9.91 can be seen for 9-12 days instead of 2-5 days from the older models. U.S.S Annapoils, registry #NX-59146, sustained a speed of Warp 9.2 for 20 hours on 2 warp engines alone. Along with the new exterior features, Annapolis class starships boast superior maneuverability. With the additions of more reaction control thrusters lining the ship's hull, Annapolis starships can maneuver as quickly as ships one third its mass. A large compliment of lifeboats line key areas of the hull where the crews would be stationed in an event of a crisis. Impulse engine designs have changed very little in the last several years. Slight modifications in the fusion generators have accounted for quicker response in overall acceleration and velocity.
