File Description

Here's a new multi-player mod for CoD2 by Zid that gives you war-related (or more accurately peace-related) quotes when you die. The client gets to specify whether the quotes appear in the obituary portion of the screen, center of the screen, or simply not at all, so server admins shouldn't be afraid of hosting the file. Just check out the screenshots below to see some examples of the options and quotes available, and download the mod to see all 150 of them! ;)

The Battle of Quotes - A Tiny Multiplayer mod for Call of Duty 2

SUMMARY:

In a little insert I made with my previous addition to the CoD citing mods, I was working on a mini-project to have these singleplayer quotes transferred over to multiplayer. Now, I'm not the best modder (nor one of the best), so it took me quite a while to do this. I didn't feel like asking any other CoD modders for tips, 'cause this is, after all, not a giant leap for Call of Duty 2.

So, wah-lah! Took me some several days to figure out what does what, but I got done nicely.

Additional quotes? Um... I think about 6 more death ones I've found. Nothing for victory, a pity...

(And yes, that is MeatBot I'm using in the screenshots)

LEGAL AGREEMENT:

Copyright belongs to Infinity Ward and such related companies that helped created Call of Duty 2. However, I don't mind distributing this mod. Just remember to include credits to me.

INSTALLATION:

		Multiplayer FPS gamers who prefer to use a few to several mods should know how to do this, but just in case, place the folder titled "bq" into your Call of Duty 2 directory, normally located in your main drive's "Program Files/Activision."

Make sure the whole game is updated to version 1.3 first before playing with this mod. The "gametypes" files I modified came from that version, so be sure you've checked the version of your copy of Call of Duty 2.

UNINSTALLATION:

		I never trust Uninstall files too much, so it's better off if I just delete the things I don't need. So goes the same with this folder. If you want to rid the mod, just delete the folder "bq" from your Call of Duty 2 directory.

HOW TO USE:

	Quotes will appear in multiplayer games when you die in any way, form, or fashion (even when you go to Spectators, though only at the beginning if you switch out of battle to Specs, because you have to die to get there). This appearance is compatible with all the official game types (Capture the Flag, Deathmatch, Headquarters, Search & Destroy, & Team Deathmatch), and should not be in any way prone to cause problems on any maps (unless there's a sentence overrriding string).

Of course, there are some gamers who wouldn't like to have quotes in his face while observing or when he's mad he got mowed down by a MG. So, in what spare time I had left developing this mod, I added an option in the Game Options of the Options menu that CONTROLS the appearance of this mod! Accessing it, I prepped 3 choices:

1. Obituary: The default and most recommended by myself and others, this limits the quotes to be displayed in the "kill list" on the bottom-left corner of your HUD, just above the compass. It's out of center of focus (unless you're wanting to know who killed you), it's on small font, AND it's easier to track who killed you because the quote will ALWAYS appear above the line of "who used what to kill you." Perfect all-around.

2. Center: Now this is more of what you expect when you think of this mod. There, right in the center of your screen is a bunch of words that teaches you about peace when really you want to stick that STG44 in that sniper's mouth and blow his head off. The quote shows up for 1-2 seconds before you're asked to respawn, and fortunately, if the server has Killcam on, the quote won't transfer over to that screen. However, the quote will stay up there for about 5-6 seconds, even after you've respawn, so it might be annoying to anybody. But be still, those who downloaded this mod while connecting to a server that uses it, "Center" is not the default appearance.

3. Off: Yeah... Self-explanatory.

To play this mod, add " +set fs_game bq" in the Target of a CoD2MP_s.exe shortcut.

KNOWN PROBLEMS:

Okay, from emails that I've gotten, apparently I'm dull-witted when it comes to catching errors and related bugs. I won't say there isn't any problems (because now I'm second-guessing myself on a lot of the things I typed in mods). Honestly, though, I DO run these mods frequently beforehand to find errors, but due to the fact that these quotes are on random variables, it takes a long time to check through each of them during gameplay (and yes, I do check through my mods in basic language every once in a while at gameplay). 154 quotes take too long when you are given one by one randomly. It's a damn pain...

Please, if any problem occurs, contact me via email or PMs.

Since this is a multiplayer mod, chances are it'll have very little problems in terms of capability.

And no, the file is not 3.23 MB. It's 86 KB; the extra memory came from the hi-resolution pictures for those of you who need eye-candy. In fact, one picture is more than 400 KB, bigger than the file itself!

MERGING:

I've gotten some comments during matches on how to merge this mod with other MP mods. This mod isn't complex, so I'll give you the steps:

	NOTE: Please remember to make a backup of your mod in case you want to go back to the original mod.

	NOTE: If any of the following files in Step 1 are in your specific mod, do NOT replace that/those file(s) with the original(s) in iw_15. Keep that/those, and only ADD the .gsc that aren't in the mod.

	1. Place "ctf.gsc," "dm.gsc," "hq.gsc," "sd.gsc," & "tdm.gsc" (These are found in "Call of Duty 2/main/iw_15.IWD/maps/mp/gametypes) into the mod (into the same /maps/mp/gametypes/ assuming you have one or created one) you've chosen.

	2. Open each of those .gsc, and scroll down the String labeled "Callback_PlayerKilled."

	3. After the line that reads [sMeansOfDeath = "MOD_HEAD_SHOT";], go to the next blank line and type in this: [maps\mp\gametypes\_deadquotes::init();]

	4. Repeat Step 2 & 3 that for all the .gsc files you placed in the mod.

	5. Add to the /gametypes Folder [_deadquotes.gsc] & [menu.gsc] (found in my mod here). If the mod already has a [menu.gsc], then add this into the end of the file:

-

REFERENCE           OBITUARY
LANG_ENGLISH        "Obituary"

REFERENCE           CENTER
LANG_ENGLISH        "Center"

REFERENCE           QUOTES
LANG_ENGLISH        "Display death quotes"

-

	6. Add to the /localizedstrings Folder [deadquotes.str] ("                  ").

	7. Add to the /ui Folder [options_game.menu] (" ") ONLY if you don't have this file in the destination mod. If you do, just add this to the file (just before the two closing signs):

-

	itemDef
	{
		name misc
		group grpControls
		type ITEM_TYPE_BUTTON
		text "@MENU_QUOTES"
		rect		0 60 1 13
		origin OPTIONS_ITEM_ORIGIN
		textstyle	OPTIONS_ITEM_TEXT_STYLE
		textalign	OPTIONS_ITEM_ALIGN
		textalignx	OPTIONS_ITEM_ALIGN_X
		textaligny	OPTIONS_ITEM_ALIGN_Y
		textscale	OPTIONS_CONTROL_TXTSCALE
		style		WINDOW_STYLE_FILLED
		backcolor	OPTIONS_CONTROL_BACKCOLOR
		forecolor	OPTIONS_CONTROL_FORECOLOR
		visible		1
		decoration
  	}

-

		itemDef
	{
		name misc
		group grpControls
		type ITEM_TYPE_MULTI
		text " "
		dvar "dq_quote"
		dvarFloatList { "@MENU_OFF" 2 "@MENU_OBITUARY" 0 "@MENU_CENTER" 1 }
		rect		0 75 OPTIONS_BIND_SIZE
		origin OPTIONS_ITEM_ORIGIN
		textstyle	OPTIONS_ITEM_TEXT_STYLE
		textalign	OPTIONS_ITEM_ALIGN
		textalignx	OPTIONS_BIND_ALIGN_X
		textaligny	OPTIONS_ITEM_ALIGN_Y
		textscale	OPTIONS_CONTROL_TXTSCALE
		style		WINDOW_STYLE_FILLED
		backcolor	OPTIONS_CONTROL_BACKCOLOR
		forecolor	OPTIONS_CONTROL_FORECOLOR
		visible		1
		mouseEnter
		{
			play "mouse_over";
		}
		action { play "mouse_click"; }
  	}

-

	The quotes should be able to appear in your chosen mod from there on out (unless some error bars the way). Just remember, if you want to revert back, all you have to do is to override your modifications with the original.

By the way, did I mention this mod is a lovely add-on to MeatBots...?

WHAT ELSE:

With Call of Duty 4 around the corner, I might start anew with the quote thing (and other such, like weapon modifications, difficulty tweaking, & singleplayer names, especially with military ranks). I'll probably do the same multiplayer quote addition. However, I won't guarantee I'll get these mods up as soon as the game is released. Give me a few months to earn some money, and we'll see...
