Since Sony hasn’t yet decided on a price for the NGP and probably won’t announce anything until at least — at least -- E3, and so we’re left guessing at what price point the NGP might be released. I suggested last night to my GF bros that it’ll be $299, and the consensus is– well, there isn’t a consensus, but my guess is right there in the middle.

First, it’s important to note something SCEE boss Andrew House said last night after the big event: “I can’t put a ballpark on it in terms of figures, but what I would say is that we will shoot for an affordable price that’s appropriate for the handheld gaming space.”

To me, that would mean it won’t cost more than a home console, and the most expensive home consoles, the 360 and PS3, cost $299. All right, on to the guesses.

First up is Colin Sebastian of Lizard Capital: “While Sony did not reveal launch pricing, based on the specs of the device and competitive landscape, we would expect $299 or higher in the US.”

Next, speaking with CVG, is Michael Pachter: “It’s a pretty impressive device, the screen is relatively expensive, and the feature set suggests to me that we’ll see something in the $249/€249/£199 range.”

Lastly, also speaking with CVG, is Jesse Divinich from EEDAR, who sugested the NGP would be priced between $299 and $349.

Sounds about right to me. It’s such a powerful device that it can’t run cheap, although you’d have to guess Sony will be content to take a loss on the hardware. For what it is, though, I think I would find it hard to be bitter over it costing as much as a home console considering what an absurd piece of machinery it is.

Note: we’re discussing the base price here, not including the 3G version.
