Apature Hand Labs is a brand new Portal game for the upcoming Valve Index VR headset, with comparability for the HTC Vive, and the best part is, it's completely free.
It's not quite the full AAA Portal game that we were expecting from the rumors circulating late last year, but it's still a pretty impressive game, especially for free. It's more of a technical demo, showing off the capabilities of the Valve Index, which has the ability to track individual finger movements, something other controllers have not been able to do so far. This gives players much finer control over objects within the game world.
The game also works on the HTC Vive, though, but it's not quite as good an experience without the Index controllers. Still, it's a great way to sample what Portal in VR has to offer. There's even something for those without any headset at all, as a short companion game known as "The Road to VR" that sees players go through a series of 'tests' set by various personality cores which will introduce them to the concepts of VR and the Index, similar to a previous Valve VR demo known as "The Lab".
The game isn't a full AAA Portal title, disappointingly, and was developed by a third party studio, Cloudhead Games, who have been working closely with Valve on their VR technology. Still, both the main VR game and "Road to VR" are both free, so you might as well give them a try.
The Valve Index hasn't been released yet, but if you have a HTC Vive, then you can give the game a try now.
