Frontwire Studios, creators of an unofficial remake for "Star Wars: Battlefront III", a sequel in the Bettlefront franchise that was never released, have announced that they have reached an agreement to release the game on Steam.
The game is called Galaxy in Turmoil and will be released for free, on Steam, after an agreement between the developers and Valve was reached to allow the distribution via Steam as long as it was on a non-profit basis.
This does not guarantee that the game will not be met by resistance by Disney, the holders of the Star Wars IP, however;
People have been expressed their concern as of late, saying they expect us to get a Cease & Desist from Disney. I’ll be honest – I’ve had mild concerns myself from time to time. However Valve clearly lacks that same concern. By agreeing to publish Galaxy in Turmoil, Valve is assisting us in growing and ensuring the longevity of the Galaxy in Turmoil project and community as a whole.
Galaxy is Turmoil started as a Cryengine 3 mod, before moving onto the Unreal Engine 3. and has snowballed into a studio of over 50 developers.
It's admirable that Steam have agreed to distribute the fan game on this basis, although it is still a massive risk for both Valve and Frontwire. would not be at all surprised to see Disney step in and take notice with the publicity this is generating for both parties. Weather the game, unlike the cancelled game it is based on, will still see the light of day? Only time will tell.
