In an interview with GameStalker, Cyberpunk 2077 Senior Quest Designer Łukasz Szczepankowski provided some great insight into the upcoming sci-fi RPG.

Szczepankowski explained that, while the worlds of The Witcher and Cyberpunk 2077 are drastically different, they are thematically similar, sharing the same dark, adult setting. He said:

“It is a dark world, with adult problems, something we are known for with The Witcher. In the future, people are still human, and their problems and passions still the same. This is the basis for a good story; the kind of story we want to tell the players.”

That story is a crucial part of the game, as Szczepankowski explained:

“This will also be a game that will include what we consider most important: a gripping, non-linear story. All this will be located in an open world environment. So I can say that all RPG fans will be satisfied with it. We aim to provide the best futuristic role-playing experience ever offered.”

The Witcher 2′s mod toolkit, the REDkit, has been positively received by the community. While Szczepankowski could not make an official statement about including mod tools in Cyberpunk 2077, he did say:

“We are thinking about it and we will support the modding community as much as possible.”

Mike Pondsmith, the designer of the original Cyberpunk 2020 tabletop RPG, may even play a cameo role in the game. Szczepankowski said:

“The Barry White voice of Mike attracts considerable attention. Obviously we want to try to give him a cameo in the game. It is the express wish of the development team.”

Several mega corporations and famous locations from the Cyberpunk 2020 pen-and-paper RPG will be found in Cyberpunk 2077, but the possibility also exists that characters from the setting may also appear. Szczepankowski said:

“The life expectancy in 2020 was 150 years. In 2077, it is even higher. So it is no problem for familiar characters [from Cyberpunk 2020] to still be alive. Who will it be? To find out, you have to play the game!”
