Posted on September 17, 2013, Matt Low Diablo 3 Auction House to Close in 2014
Not only did Diablo 3 receive a port recently with their release on both current and next generation consoles (and a console specific trailer), but Blizzard developers have another issued another upcoming update. The Diablo 3 gold and real-money auction house system is going to be removed from the game entirely. The shutdown is scheduled to take place March 18, 2014. During Gamescom, Blizzard admitted that it had considered shutting it down.
The developers felt that the auction house detracted from the main game of Diablo 3 which is killing monsters and getting awesome item drops. Combine that with their new Loot 2.0 system coming in the Reaper of Souls expansion means that we’ll be going back to a more classic method of getting items without having to shell out cash for loot. You can find out more on their reasoning in this video announcement below.
Personally, I was indifferent to to the auction house system when it was first released. I had no plans on purchasing any gear or gold. But I was more of the casual Diablo player to begin with. I felt that the auction house was a quick and convenient way to replace items I felt were weak. At the same time, I understand how crappy it feels as a new player walking right into the game will have a tough time with the economy since many of the top level items are going for billions of gold (and not many low level ones available). This just might be the first step in the right direction and maybe Reaper of Souls can help salvage the reputation of the game.
What do you think of Blizzard’s decision to close the down the auction house? The general reaction in their announcement post has been positive! Will this bring you back to playing the game before Reaper of Souls comes out?
