When ESPN and Xbox LIVE announced their partnership, as E3 2010 kicked into gear, the potential seemed limitless. Since then, the service has been updated incrementally, bringing Xbox LIVE Gold members ever-closer to the dreams of sports-fan paradise that fueled that initial press conference. Today, in preparation for the 2011-12 college football season, ESPN on Xbox LIVE announced another auspicious overhaul.

The first big revelation? Split screen. The two entertainment behemoths at the helm here know their customers, and they know they love sports and have a lot of on-screen real estate. Why confine them to a single contest? The best parts of this feature are the perks — both screens can be paused or rewound individually, and you have a choice between two live games or a live game and a feed of news and highlights.

Speaking of news and highlights, ESPN is adding a special Scoreboard feature for college football, which will enable users to stay abreast of the sports’ multifarious conferences and games. Keeping track of things is really the order of the day in this update. New feature My Sports enables you to tag your favorite sports and teams, gaining quick and easy access to theme every time you log on. Other new additions like the Mini Guide, Reminders, Live Alerts and ESPN Bottom Line are all similarly calibrated to keep you informed about any sports action you might be interested in.

All of these features can be voice controlled, thanks to Kinect. Though it might get confused if you shout at the TV, either in exultation or in agony. After all, that tends to happen when you’re watching sports.
