Launches for many of the Fall’s biggest games have come and gone, but one monstrous title looms, glowering, on the horizon. Huge and complicated — like its title — The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim promises to set a new standard for epic fantasy gaming.
Thanks to its non-traditional, numerologically significant release date — Friday, 11/11/11 — Skyrim is still a couple of days away. That leaves plenty of time for rampant speculation and fevered anticipation. Thanks to the efforts of distinguished medical professionals, we now know that reading extensive preview articles is the best way to combat pre-release jitters. With that in mind, GameFront presents: Everything We Know About Skyrim.

The World of Skyrim
Ever since we first feasted our eyes on this giant map of Skyrim, our excitement has been hard to contain. The gameworld will be roughly the size of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion’s, though it will obviously benefit from improvements in draw distance, texture quality, and detail.
The geography, thanks to Skyrim’s position to the north of Cyrodiil, will be slightly more craggy and barren, though there will be abundant natural beauty as well. The inclusion of giant mountains provides monolithic obstacles, sweeping vistas, and vast subterranean areas. Much has also been made by previewers of the game‘s dynamic weather and day-night cycle, which will add additional atmosphere to already-epic encounters. These encounters will take place all over — outdoors, in the game’s 130 dungeons, in towns, hamlets, and in five major cities.
