There wasn't too much noteworthy coming out of this year's State of Play, the annual livestream from Sony that showcases new and upcoming titles for the console, but one noteworthy piece of news was a new trailer that revealed the launch date for Final Fantasy VII Rebirth.
The trailer confirmed the date will be February 29, 2024, exclusively on PlayStation - however, interestingly, the exclusivity period held by Sony for the title is just three months, which means we may see PC or even Xbox releases as soon as late May or early June.
The trailer also reveals the return of a number of Final Fantasy favourites, including Vincent Valentine. The Gold Saucer also features within the trailer, giving us a glimpse at one of the mini-games that will feature in Rebirth.
We get a glimpse at a number of iconic locations from FFVII in the trailer, many of which are recognisable but entirely overhauled, sometimes in very surprising ways. According to the game's creative director, Tetsuya Nomura, there will be "shifts" in the order that players will visit locations and that The Forgotten Capital will feature at the end of the game.
“We have mentioned this a few times before, but the order in which you can explore the locations is not the same as the original Final Fantasy VII, and there are some shifts in the order. For example, Wutai, one of the major locations, is not part of the route in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth and will be visited in the next one," said Nomura. "Although there are some changes in the order of the locations, the locations depicted in this title extend up to ‘The Forgotten Capital,’ where the greatest fate of Final Fantasy VII awaits you.”
