Posted on December 11, 2007, Chris Halo 3 Heroic Map Pack is Now Available
While I don’t believe there to be anything heroic about it, the first batch of Halo 3 downloadable content is now available on the Xbox Live Marketplace for 800 Microsoft Points ($10). The map pack includes three maps: Rat’s Nest, Standoff, and Foundry.
We’ve covered the details of the maps previously (see here for a brief outline of what to expect from each), but it’s worth reiterating a few things about the pricing – which I’d argue is a bit too high, and others believe is 800 points too much – was even said to be too much by Bungie’s Brian Jarrard.
“Obviously…we’d love to give the maps away for free to recognize our fans and all the great support they’ve shown us. But in the spring, they’ll be free. We’re happy we’re able to keep doing that because I have to imagine that some people would probably rather never make them available for free because you’re walking away from this cash cow, right?”
“We talked to Microsoft a lot about this,” says Jarrard. “They’ve got guys who specialize in doing research on what people are going to spend and how much people are willing to pay — and they set the price point based on their expertise. But for people that don’t want to spend the money, hopefully it’ll be a short wait and the maps will be available for free in the spring.”
When asked if the maps were too pricey, Jarrard said, “Yeah, probably a little bit.”
As he said, they’ll be free come springtime, but it’s too bad the audience is going to be segmented in the meantime.
