While director Neill Blomkamp claimed the Halo movie was “entirely dead” recently, that doesn’t mean the release of a Halo movie in one form or another wasn’t going to happen. While Universal and Fox, the two studios who planned on financing and distributing the movie have dropped out, Peter Jackson’s involvement means pre-production at Weta in New Zealand doesn’t have to stop.

“What happened was this: Universal, on behalf of both studios, asked for a meeting with the filmmakers just prior to the due date of a significant payment,” explained Ken Kamins, representative for exec producers Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh. “Basically, they said that in order to move forward with the film, the filmmakers had to significantly reduce their deals. They waited until the last minute to have this conversation. Peter and Fran, after speaking with their producing partners and with Microsoft and Bungie, respectfully declined.”

Kamins proceeded to also shoot down rumors pertaining to the budget of the film.  “The only budget the filmmakers every spoke about was $145 million less the 12.5% rebate that you get from shooting in New Zealand, which would put it at about $128 million.”

One other point of concern is of course with Neill Bromkamp, who is viewed as a novice director who shouldn’t be at the helm of a project with such a massive budget. But Kamins had words on this subject as well, reiterating the confidence Jackson has in Bromkamp. “Everybody is supremely confident in Neall. Part of what excited Peter and Fran was Neill’s vision. We’re very confident this film will move forward with the creative partners intact, who will take the film to production.”

With the absolutely massive numbers Halo 3 put up last month, you’ve gotta think this is going to eventually get done. It’s just a matter of finding the right people to work with. The Halo film is still coming, it’s just going to take longer than was expected.
