Here's why Helldivers 2 players are killing each other for no reason

I must admit, while multiplayer games aren't usually my cup of tea, I've been enjoying Helldivers 2 so far. The premise is pretty hilarious, the gameplay solid, and the difficulty curve one I am, admittedly, still coming to grips with. It does suffer from the usual downside of online multiplayer experiences, though, and that is... well, other human beings.

Perhaps a great example of this is a phenomenon that has led to players on Reddit begging their fellow Helldivers to stop killing their teammates, for seemingly no good reason. You might be thinking that attempting to reason with trolls is a waste of time, right? Well, it turns out that the impetus behind the insane level of TK'ing in the game isn't actually down to trolls but rather a fundamental misunderstanding.

As it turns out, there's a huge number of players out there assuming that the resources scattered around the maps, like super credits, samples and medals, are only obtained by the person collecting them. Yup, that's right, there's a bunch of players out there who don't realise that all these resources are shared by the team and are randomly killing their own teammates out of a selfish desire to collect everything for themselves...

One thread on the Helldivers subreddit helpfully pointed out that “YOU SHARE ALL SAMPLES, REQUISITION CREDS, SUPER CREDS, MEDALS YOU PICK UP!”, pleading with players to "stop killing your teammates thinking you have something they don’t.” The comments are pretty hilarious, and it seems this basic misunderstanding is hugely prevalent within the game.

This doesn't excuse the behaviour of these players; sabotaging your own team to collect a few resources, especially in a game like Helldivers 2 where working together is not just a suggestion, but pretty much mandatory to complete your objectives, would be dumb even if resources weren't shared - but the fact they're doing it for seemingly no good reason is pretty hilarious... and tells you everything you need to know, really.
