Posted on December 5, 2011, Phil Hornshaw Herman Cain Quotes Pokemon Movie in Campaign-Ending Speech
Former Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain stepped out of the race on Saturday, and he did it with class — by referencing one of the greatest stories of our time.
I’m speaking, as you well know, about Pokemon: The Movie 2000.
“Life can be a challenge, life can seem impossible, it’s never easy when there is so much on the line. But you and I can make a difference,” Cain said during the speech, according to CNN. This time, at least, he knew he was talking about the Donna Summers-sung theme song to the 2000 cartoon. Last time he quoted it…not so much.
GQ notes that the first time Cain used the quote, he attributed it to “a poet” and said he couldn’t remember where he’d heard it. (He said he thought it was during the 2000 Olympics. Nope, it was the 2000 Pokemon World Championships. I kid.) Once he’d been corrected by the media, he mentioned the quote again, this time with the proper attribution.
A bit of a gaffe, but one that’s a great reminder for the U.S. these days. The country could use a new mantra: “You teach me, and I’ll teach you. Pokemon.”
