Fans of CRPGs(Computer RolePlaying Games, a genre mostly known for including titles such as Neverwinter Nights, Baldur's Gate, and Fallout) may be pleased to hear that a group of modders are working on bringing Black Isle Studio's Icewind Dale up to date.
They intend to do this by essentially recreating the entire game and game world within the lesser known Troika Games' title "The Temple of Elemental Evil". Though it's a long, arduous and no doubt tough project, the team seem convinced enough in their efforts that they've announced an open beta.
Icewind Dale, originally released in July, 2000, takes place in the eponymous dale and its ten cities as the player fights to secure them from a demonic force. It was received with some acclaim, and received an expansion - Heart of Winter - in 2001, as well as a sequel in 2002. In 2014, Overhaul Games published a less well received remaster of the game.
The Temple of Elemental Evil, meanwhile, was released in 2003. While the game itself didn't receive as much acclaim as other CRPG's based in the Forgotten Realms, it did manage to survive with a modding community for several years.
Installing the beta requires a number of steps, all of which are outlined in a post on the Circle of Eight modding forums, which you can reach by clicking here.
