We reported a few days ago about Modern Warfare's art director Joel Emsile taking to reddit to confirm that there'll be no loot boxes in Modern Warfare, but of course the community were waiting for the 'but' to come at the end of that sentence - that's now arrived, as the company have confirmed their replacement for loot boxes in the form of a battle pass system.
The company stated in an announcement that new base weapons and "functional attachments" would have to be earned through regular gameplay, but the Battle Pass system, which features free and premium tiers, will allow players to obtain various cosmetic content, which the company say "does not impact game balance". The battle pass also gives players extra opportunities to earn COD Points, the game's in-game currency.
It won't feature at launch, though, instead the battle pass will go live when the post-launch live seasons start, and there'll be themed content with each season.
In a statement, Activision said;
First and foremost, we are all focused on making the Day One experience awesome. Second, it’s important to us that everyone who is playing Modern Warfare has the chance to work their way through the new game and unlock all the rewards that are waiting for you. We expect to launch this system for Modern Warfare later this year.
It's not entirely unexpected, as we mentioned in our previous article, the industry is now turning away from loot boxes due to various legal woes in various territories, instead looking for other methods of monetizing additional content. Ultimately though, it's still money for cosmetics, although it's certainly a much better system when players know what they're getting before they buy.
