A sandbox action-RPG in the vein of the Batman: Arkham series set in the Lord of the Rings fantasy universe.
That’s the pitch the team at Monolith (Guardians of Middle-earth) is making for their just announced project, Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor. Game Informer got the exclusive reveal, including this nice piece of artwork which will adorn the January issue:
Shadow of Mordor is set after the events portrayed in The Hobbit and before Middle-earth goes to hell in the Lord of the Rings trilogy. The story will revolve around an all new character, a ranger named Talion who is venturing deep into the heart of Mordor on an as-yet undisclosed mission.
Of note, Game Informer says Shadow of Mordor will feature a new “Nemesis” system. Every single baddie will have its own name and stats that evolve over the course of the game. If Talion encounters a creature early on, and for whatever reason allows it to live, the enemy will continue to grow and evolve, and likely provide a much different challenge if it crosses the player’s path a second time.
That’s all we’ve got on Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor for now, aside from platforms and launch window: PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 sometime in 2014.
Lots of potential here. After the so-so Lord of the Rings: War in the North, the LOTR gaming universe could use a boost. Hopefully Monolith can become to Middle-earth what Rocksteady became to Gotham.
