It seems after their last adventure, Ratchet and Clank were all set to retire. Just one last escort mission to help President Quark accept the “Tool of Justice” award for defeating the Zegrute and then it’s all tropical drinks, beaches and hammocks… or whatever lombaxes do when they retire. There’s just one small problem, no one wants to give the cowardly Quark an award and it is indeed a trap set by none other than Dr. Nefarious.
Shaun McCabe, the Production Director at Insomniac Studios offered me some insight on the Ratchet and Clank’s latest batch of trouble. It seems that Dr. Nefarious invented this fictional award as a means of luring Quark into his trap. But as Shaun explains: “Like most of Dr. Nefarious’ plans, things go horribly awry.” But just as Ratchet and Clank manage to fight their way out of the trap “Another even more powerful entity, Efemerus, the Creature Collector comes and picks them up… and takes them all away to his homeworld.” Faced with this new and more powerful threat, Dr. Nefarious is forced to join forces with Ratchet, Clank and Quark. All four of these characters will be playable as the heroes (and villain) set out for adventure on planet Magmus.
Shaun tells us that although Dr. Nefarious will be joining the heroes “Dr. Nefarious does not become a good guy in this game by any stretch. He is evil to the core but he is also pragmatic and realizes there is only one way to get out of here.” During a brief cinematic we see that Dr. Nefarious’ initial motivation for joining the protagonists is not wanting to be left alone with the inhabitants of planet Magmus.
“A big central mystery to the game is figuring out who is behind this machine and what is going on in this planet” says Shaun. Apparently Magmus was once a peaceful idyllic planet before Efemerus began bringing dangerous creatures to the planet. Shuan was silent when asked what the purpose of the collection was or if anyone was manipulating Efemerus.
All 4 One is structured around multiplayer action. You need at least one teammate to solve some of the puzzles. If you’re playing by yourself, the game gives you one AI bot to help you out. But the folks at Insomniac are hoping you’ll team up with your buddies. The game allows for “any mix of couch and online play.” This means that if you had two friends at your house you could go online and find one more to join your team.
