smasheddvd1.jpgFor weeks now, we’ve been seeing random reports claiming that HD-DVD was dead, but now it’s practically official. A source at Toshiba will soon be completely exiting the “next generation DVD business” completely, leaving Sony’s Blu-Ray format effectively free to take over the market. Toshiba has already initiated plans to halt production of HD-DVD players and recorders, which will cost them tens of billions of yen in losses. The source blamed HD-DVD’s failure on a weak marketing campaign and said the company has learned a lot from this format war.

I’d just like to say, thank you, Technology Jesus, for finally bringing an end to this nonsense. Now I just need to actually care enough to start even trying to build a Blu-Ray movie collection.
