If you haven't played Nuclear Throne yet, you should: it's good, honest, post apocalyptic roguelike mutant fun. The only problem with the game is that, while co-op has always been a feature for local players, you could never play online: until now!
Modder YellowAfterlife's new mod, Nuclear Throne Together, brings online co-op to the game, and despite reverse-engineering the game in order to achieve this, the game's author, Vlambeer, has given the unofficial mod his full blessing.
The mod goes one step further, however, as well as introducing online co-op. it also tidies up a bunch of bugs and problems with the co-op mode in general.
In his announcement, YellowAfterLife openly admits that the mod took a "monumental amount of effort" and that the sheer amount of things that are going on at the same time isn't easy to deal with over the internet, especially when dealing with low-latency connections.
While the game starts with singular enemies and a few projectiles here and there, in mere 10-15 minutes you can already have decades of enemies and hundreds of projectiles (many of which your own) at screen at once. Obviously, you can't just send that much information on an average internet connection easily.
The mod works around this in a rather clever way, however, by introducing a "synchronous" \ "lockstep" - like system, which basically means the two sessions are designed to reach the same pre-determined outcomes, meaning they should theoretically stay in "sync" without having to transmit everything each client is doing.
Despite these optimisations, you will need a fairly good connection to play;
All in all, while the mod requires somewhat-low-latency (100ms delay / 200ms ping) connection for comfortable play, that's already substantially better than needing the second player to come over.
So if you haven't already, now is definitely the time to jump in and try Nuclear Throne!
