UPDATE 2: AMD responded with an official “no comment.” So far, we have no word on when, if at all, AMD was informed of the move.

UPDATE: When pressed for further comment, Origin PC CEO Kevin Wasielewski replied with the following statement:

“ORIGIN PC is dedicated to providing the best experience for our customers and right now that is with NVIDIA GPUs.  It’s not about brand loyalty or marketing, our loyalty is 100% to our customers.  We work very closely with numerous manufactures and we are constantly testing and validating the latest hardware to provide options for our customers.  Parts that ORIGIN PC validates have to provide an extremely high level of performance, stability, and support.  As hardware changes and evolves, so do we.  We will continue to focus on providing the best possible experience for our customers, regardless of brand name, and devotedly dependent on customer satisfaction.”

Regarding Origin PC’s new Battlebox partnership with Nvidia:

“The NVIDIA Battlebox promotion that is currently running with Origin PC and other system builders that work with NVIDIA has absolutely nothing to do with our decision.  We have been included in other NVIDIA promotions in the past as well, this one just happens to be running right now.”

Origin PC, one of the best-known boutique gaming PC manufacturers around, will no longer ship PCs with AMD GPUs.

Polygon broke the news just a few minutes ago, and it sounds like the decision to cut AMD out came from both customers and Origin PC employees alike.

“Origin PC is dedicated to providing the best experience for our customers and right now that is with Nvidia GPUs. It’s not about brand loyalty or marketing; our loyalty is 100 percent to our customers,” said Kevin Wasielewski, co-founder and CEO of Origin PC, in an email to Polygon.

I reached out to Kevin Wasielewski about the strategy shift as well, and his response echos the “customer first” strategy outlined above:

“We feel the best experience for our customers is NVIDIA right now. This is from customers and our own support staff’s feedback.”

Alvaro Masis, one of the support managers at Origin PC, added that AMD GPUs were giving Origin problems on nearly all fronts: overheating, performance, scaling and driver support.

While losing a partner like Origin does not spell doom and gloom for AMD, it’s a pretty substantial PR blow to the Radeon graphics team. With new AMD cards — the R9 and R7 series — on the way later this month, maintaining partner relationships is crucial.
