I'd be lying if I said I knew much about basketball, but from what I understand, it's been over nine years since a basketball game allowed you to play with college teams - until now - thanks to one user's insane amount of hard work.
While not a mod in the traditional sense, NBA 2K17 fan SkillazKill has spent a rather impressive (or worrying) amount of time and effort creating all 36 college teams and 198 players - no mean feat, let me tell you. I can only speak from the create-a-wrestler feature in the WWE 2K games, but creating one wrestler (or basketball player, in this case) with any degree of accuracy is insanely hard work - never mind 198.
While arguably, create-a-wrestler is a built-in game function, and not truly modding in the traditional sense, it's when you really stop to appreciate the level of hard work and attention to detail in these created players and teams, that you realise that the effort required and skill and dedication is no less impressive. As somebody who knows nothing about basketball, I was still very impressed, so much so I just felt I had to write this article.
In addition to painstakingly re-creating all of the school teams, uniforms and rosters, there is also custom arenas with the relevant logos, and even custom team coaches who look pretty darn close to the real thing. Apparently, the screenshot below, released by the author, shows a man named Jim Boeheim, coach of Syracuse University's college team.
I have no idea who he is, mind, so for clarification, I'll put it side-by-side with the photo from his wikipedia page.
Looks pretty accurate to me. If you're interested in checking out the 'mod', see the video above for details on what to download and from where - bare in mind, though, that these created assets are only available for the PS4 version currently.
Do you know of any other impressive feats of create-a-character prowess - other than my spectacular create-a-wrestler, that is? If so, let us know in the comments down below!
