A few eye opening numbers that indicate just how massive League of Legends has become: 1.4 million, 12 million, and 27 million.
In 2011, Riot Games proudly proclaimed that its first season of LoL saw an average of 1.4 million Summoners logging on to play every day. In 2012, that number exploded to 12 million. With 2013 in the books, Riot has once again run the numbers and found that the average daily player count is now over 27 million. So in two years, LoL went from 1.1 million average daily players to 27 million.
Insert jaw-dropped emoticon here.
Riot shared the stats with the Wall Street Journal (of all places), noting that LoL’s concurrent users peak is now more than 7.5 million Summoners. To put that into perspective, Steam recently set a new concurrent users record with 7.6 million. That’s 7.6 million people playing in Steam’s library of thousands of games. In Riot’s case, those 7.5 million are all playing League of Legends.
A week ago, SuperData estimated that League of Legends generated $624 million in 2013. I think they’ll have to adjust that figure based on Riot’s latest disclosure.
No wonder everyone is trying to jump on the MOBA bandwagon.
