It's not commonly remembered that the DotA games began life life as a mod for Warcraft 3, but one developer is looking to re-create that success by turning another mod for the game, Warlocks, into a brand new game called Ruin.
Ruin has actually been in development for several years now, but the developers, Tarhead Studios, have now started a new Kickstarter campaign to fund the project, including the cost of servers and assets. Now, I'm no fan of Kickstarter, and the number of times I've seen similar projects run away with money and produce no results, but the campaign is doing well so far, already having reached more than half of the total £10,000 (or thereabouts) goal.
Ruin and DotA share some similarities, given their share heritage, but it has much more of a brawling focus, as the developers explain.
Originally inspired by the Warcraft 3 mod Warlock, we have set out to make an arcade-style arena game that captures the raw joy and hilarity created from fast-paced, chaotic core gameplay mechanics and the rewarding feeling of mastering said mechanics as you learn to out-manoeuvre your opponents and laugh as they fall victim to your mind games.
Anyone who backs the project is promised pre-release copies of the game around April this year, but as I say, be very aware of what a Kickstarter is - there's no guarantee you'll get what you're paying for - infact, this isn't a payment for anything - it's a financial investment that could see no returns.
