The Note 7 hasn't exactly gone to plan for Samsung - first they started exploding, and after recall, started exploding again. Now it seems they're trying to erase the phone from history altogether, by not only discontinuing the product, but by erasing all parody of it, too.
It shouldn't have to be constantly noted that parody is protected under most copyright law, but YouTube seems to constantly fall on the side of the claimant when it comes to such cases - this being no exception. Samsung, no doubt in an effort to save face, have decided to issue copyright claims against videos that showcase the GTA V Exploding Galaxy Note 7 mod that we wrote about the other week.
Some videos have now returned to the internet after their authors filed a counter-claim - but often YouTubers, especially established ones with many subscribers - don't like to contest claims even if they have valid reason to do so, the reason being that there's a risk that if Google don't find in your favour, then the damage to your account is often a lot worse.
This often leaves YouTube's copyright system open to abuse, as companies such as Samsung can have videos removed when there is no valid reason to do so.
One popular GTA YouTuber, DoctorGTA, who has now got a permanent strike against his channel for uploading a video featuring the mod, had the following to say;
I don’t understand what I did wrong. It really sucks … because I really worked hard on this channel
Samsung totally ceased production of the Note 7 handset earlier this month, after failing to get their exploding phones back under control during a recall - unfortunately, it seems their legal department is also out of control.
In any event, I'm at least very glad I chose the iPhone over the Samsung.
