White Noise, the team behind the excellent re-imagining of Silent Hill in the Source engine last year, are back, this time with a whole new survival horror with emphasis on co-op gameplay, set in post-USSR purgatory.
For those who never played Alchemilla, it was a re-creation of Silent Hill in Valve's Source Engine, but with a stronger emphasis placed on exploration and puzzle solving, as opposed to just straight combat. Their new, entirely original venture, "Twin Soul", aims to re-produce some of that formula, with a unique storyline and setting.
Twin Soul is set in "post USSR times", but with a twist - the game's main protagonists are actually dead, trapped in purgatory. The game follows the struggle of their souls, as they try to find the way out of purgatory and into the afterlife - along the way discovering how they ended up there, and learning about the world's fear and social dysfunction.
While there's not a lot of story in the above trailer, I think you'll agree it's deliciously disturbing...
There's some irony to calling this a survival horror game, given you're already dead, but overlooking that small detail, the game features an option to either sneak and avoid enemies, or to confront them head-on, although the latter strategy isn't for the faint of heart - the enemies in the game harness "superhuman strength", and can be tough to take down.
"Each monster has their weak side", however, and knowing how to tackle a particular enemy will greatly aid in it's defeat.
The game is still in an early stage of development, but this is definitely one to keep an eye on if you're a fan of the genre. You can stay up to date with the latest developments at the team's IndieDB page.
