Developers don’t always make the right decisions, but when they listen to the community, these poor decisions can just as easily be reverted to appease the game’s fanbase. Case in point: Sony Online Entertainment planned to introduce paid-for buffs into Planetside 2.
The decision was met with an uproar from the game’s community on its official forums and on reddit, where users complained about the idea, calling it “scummy”. Some users brought up the fact that the game’s developers had previously promised that such a plan would never happen, and that implementing it would be going back on their word.
“Pay to win is the surefire way to kill a game,” wrote one user. “I really hope they realize their mistake before it’s to late.”
SOE President John Smedley has since taken to Twitter to revise the company’s decision to implement these pay-to-win buffs.

It remains to be seen how the studio will implement character implants, but it certainly won’t be through a pay-to-win mechanism given the reaction of the player-base.
