UPDATE: Headline changed to avoid confusion. Yes, we know development is not exactly equal to greenlighting; word chosen in service of brevity.

Hey, so what does Shadow of the Colossus, have in common with BioShock, Uncharted, and Gears of War? If you said ‘it’s eventually not going to be made into a movie’, you guessed right! Deadline is reporting that Sony has signed Chronicle director Josh Trank to direct a movie based on the beloved Playstation 2 classic.

Sony is reportedly auditioning writers to work with Trank, and has tapped hugely successful producer Kevin Misher to shepherd it. Of course, before Trank gets started, he’s going to have to finish up a couple of other things first. Nothing major, just the Fantastic Four reboot he’s currently developing. Oh, there’s also the film based on the idiotic Spider-Man character Venom he’s been hired to develop (possibly as a sequel to this summer’s The Amazing Spider-Man). So, just as soon as he knocks out the 2 or 3 years it’ll take to make two expensive super-hero movies, he’ll get right on it.

We all know what’s going to happen. Eventually, either A) Trank won’t be able to to come to terms with Sony over content and will quit, B) leaked details about the movie will confirm significant departures from the actual game, causing a well-deserved backlash, and Trank will quit, or C) Trank will quit just because that’s what directors do when they aren’t named Uwe Boll and they sign up to make a movie based on a game that doesn’t suck. Whatever the reason, you can bet real money right now that Trank will never direct this, and further that it will never ever happen. Yes, there will never be a Shadow of the Colossus movie. Count on it.

I realize I’m in the minority here, but I will admit I don’t actually like Shadow of the Colossus. It’s challenging, aesthetically beautiful, and very well designed. It’s also one of the most boring, inscrutable wastes of time I’ve ever played. Even so, I’m smart enough to know that it’s an important artistic milestone in gaming, one that does not remotely lend itself to a traditional Hollywood film. Maybe it could be made into a Studio Ghibli-style anime, but definitely not a live action film. But what about you, Game Front readers? Does Trank sound like the right man for the job? Is there even a point to making a movie based on a game like this? Sound off in comments.
