It's fair to say that StarCraft fans have been waiting for a MMO for a long, long time. Many people have attempted to make MMO mods for 2010's StarCraft II, but a new MMO mod for the game has just launched in an open beta; but will Blizzard approve?

World of Warcraft has become the world's most successful MMO, so it's a wonder that Blizzard never gave StarCraft the same treatment. Fans have tried to fill in this inexplicable gap: in 2011, modder Winzen created World of Starcraft, an attempt to turn StarCraft II into an MMO, only for the project to ultimately face it's demise at the hands of Blizzard.

It's surprising then to hear that World of StarCraft's developer is now back with a new fan game, StarCraft Universe, and according to the author, Blizzard has given the project it's blessing.

Apparently, after the original World of Starcraft mod was shut down by Blizzard, Valve, the owners of the popular Steam platform, offered Winzen a job, which Winzen declined. Instead, he continued to work on the project in secret, and instead opened negotiations with Blizzard in order to find a way in which the mod could be released.

The Deputy General Counsel from Blizzard contacted me last night to discuss the details of the ‘World of Starcraft’ project. We talked for a while and apparently some people from Blizz were concerned I was developing the game somehow outside of SC2. Anyways I explained the details of the project to him and made it clear this mod was to be developed within SC2.

As it turned out that the biggest objection that Blizzard had with the project was the name; Blizzard had recently filed a copyright on the name "World of StarCraft".

After that was clear he obviously wanted the name to be changed … I’m trying to work with him to get the name Starcraft Universe (Currently in holding by Mille25) or Starcraft Chronicles. I am fully respectful of Blizzard’s Intellectual property, and they DO in fact own a copyright on ‘World of Starcraft’ and have EVERY RIGHT to do what they did. If I want to continue this project I’m at the mercy of Blizzard’s good graces since they OWN it all.

Winzen and his team, named Upheaval Arts Gaming, have now released a cinematic and gameplay trailer for the game, along with a beta version release that anybody is free to download.

It's create to hear that the mod didn't die as many people thought it had back in 2013; and it's even better that Blizzard seem happy for the project to exist, at least for the moment. You can support the project on INDIEGOGO, or follow them on Twitter or Facebook for updates.

There are currently four open beta zones available now on Battle.net, those being;

SC Universe: Prologue 1 (Singleplayer Basic Tutorial) SC Universe: Prologue 2 (Multiplayer Basic Raid) SC Universe: Prologue 3 (Singleplayer Ship Tutorial) SC Universe: Beyond Koprulu (Limited Open Beta)
