Take-Two are bucking the 'Store' trend, but when will it stop?

There's been a huge trend towards developers creating their own platforms to distribute their games away from the grandfather platform, Valve's Steam, but even though it may be proving popular among developers like EA, Ubisoft, Bethesda and Epic Games, one developer has indicated that they're unlikely to join in the fun.

Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick has categorially stated they have no plans to launch a Take-Two store, or "indicating to the consumer where they need to be".

This is good news, in my opinion, as there's already a plethora of platforms on which to purchase new games, and the lure of exclusive content, while no doubt more profitable to the developer due to a direct sale, is ultimately bad for the consumer, thanks to fragmentation of the market, and people's game libraries. 

Infact I have SIX different game launchers installed on my PC right now, seven if we include Windows' built in Xbox App, and it's pretty infuriating at times. I forget which games I even own at times.

This is why I welcome Take-Two's defiance of this trend. They carry a lot of weight in the industry, and I could think of nothing more infurating than if I had to install an eighth launcher just to enjoy Red Dead Redemption 2 on PC.... (that is a thing coming soon, right?)

If you have something incredibly powerful, then I suppose you can say to consumers that it's only available here. But generally speaking, when it comes to broad-based entertainment offerings, you are better placed to be where the consumer is, rather than indicating to the consumer where they need to be...

I feel like this is a very healthy approach to the situation. I'm not even saying have competing stores, if you want to, although going against Steam is a bit tricky given their current huge monopoly - but by forcing exclusives, you're inconveniencing players. Imagine if your local cinema wasn't able to show the latest Marvel movie because it was only being shown in Marvel's own cinemas, which may not be as convenient for you to get to?

That all being said, I don't see this trend ending anytime soon, unfortunately, so I'll just have to keep juggling my game libraries. At least I know I won't have to worry when it comes to Red Dead 2, though.

You know, things are getting so stupid and shitty that at this point I just want them to accelerate the trend so the metaphoric overflow will occur and things will be good again.

While this move from Take-Two and recently from Epic Games is nothing really different from having multiple different physical store chains you could buy games from, the gaming world is oversaturated so hard already that they're basically too late for the party. I anticipate hilarity of some sort will ensue as developers pick and choose which stores to sell their games from, some scandals will ensue, some stores will close down due to those same controversies and/or by not getting enough traffic, and we'll be back to 2-3 stores again.
