Since the announcement of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt last week, more information about the game has begun to trickle out from sporadic interviews across the web with its developers.

The latest information about the game comes from an interview with GameInformer, in which its developers at CD Projekt RED talked at length about the vastness of the world, drawing comparisons to the likes of Skyrim and Fallout: New Vegas. Konrad Tomaszkiewicz, Game Director, and Mateusz Tomaszkiewicz, Lead Quest Designer were on hand to talk about the game.

According to the designers, everyone at the studio is a fan of Skyrim and its open world and as such recognize the shortcomings of Bethesda’s setting, which they described as “generic.” They described how they disliked the way Skyrim handled its quests, which made the player feel detached from the events that played out. They stated that with The Witcher 3, they intend for the player to feel like he or she belongs to the world, with NPCs that acknowledge deeds accomplished by the player. Real choices and consequences are essential, they say, to provide a sense of immersion.

They added that Skyrim’s lack of memorable personalities detracted from the setting, which in and of itself was a joy to explore. To that end, the studio is learning from Skyrim’s strengths and weaknesses in order to better create a setting that feels alive, while rewarding players for exploration.

Finally, the developers said that The Witcher 3 isn’t the only open world game they’re building, and that their other RPG, Cyberpunk 2077, will also feature an open world and incorporate the same structure.

You can listen to the rest of the interview at GameInformer, in which the developers share their views on Fallout: New Vegas and Assassin’s Creed 3.
