A new addition to the Thief franchise has been in the works for quite sometime, with Eidos and Square Enix having announced that the game’s development way back in 2009. Since then, little information has surfaced about the game’s development, which seemed to be all but forgotten when the studio had released instead Deus Ex: Human Revolution in 2011. A website was up announcing the game as “Thi4f”.

It would appear that after Deus Ex was released, the studio went back to work (if they had ever stopped) on the new Thief game, dropping the “4″ in the process—as is apparent with today’s reveal on Game Informer.

The new Thief game is set for a 2014 release on the PC and next-gen consoles including the PlayStation 4. As previously mentioned, it is currently being developed at Eidos Montreal with Square Enix as its publisher.

The new Thief game will see Garrett’s return to the Gothic-Steampunk setting of the City, which has been struck by a mysterious plague during his absence. The City is ruled by a tyrant called the Baron, with whom Garrett—and thus the player—will cross paths. The game is described as having wide-open levels reminiscent of the original Thief and Thief 2, allowing players to traverse through the City’s many routes.

Earlier today, screenshots intended for the publication were leaked by a Russian games website. You can find those here.
