Todd Howard thinks DLC is dumb when you could let your game‘s community create content basically forever.

The developer behind The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim said during an interview with G4TV that Bethesda benefits greatly from putting out modding tools for its games. The mods actually benefit Bethesda because they bring so much additional attention to games like Skyrim through their massive modding communities.

Howard also said he and the Bethesda team has been pretty well awed by some of the mods created by users to enhance, alter and otherwise reshape their games. DLC isn’t half as effective or fun at creating a good gameplay experience, he said.

With the way publishers are leveraging DLC to make money off players coming, going, sleeping and breathing, it’s refreshing to hear someone like Howard advocating for modding. We’d love to see more player-made content creeping back into games, but that’s probably wishful thinking.
