Square Enix’s president Yoichi Wada exited the company last week following a revised financial forecast, which had apparently failed to account for what the publisher thought of as a slow start for the sales of the newly released game, Tomb Raider.

Be that as it may, the head of Crystal Dynamics, Darrell Gallagher revealed at a GDC panel today that the latest Tomb Raider had set a sales record for the franchise. He explained that the series reboot had enjoyed the highest first-week sales throughout the entire history of the Tomb Raider series.

Gallagher also stated that Tomb Raider was thus far the “biggest opening” in 2013, perhaps not accounting for the release BioShock Infinite last week—the sales stats of which have yet to be released.

According to the developer, Tomb Raider had logged 1 million players within its first 48 hours across all platforms, and that the game had sold 3.4 million units as of his GDC presentation today.

Despite the game’s success to Crystal Dynamics, its parent company Square Enix will continue to regard it as a failure unless it manages to push over 5 million units in sales according to games analyst Billy Pidgeon (via GameSpot).
