It seems Twisted Metal won’t be making it to shelves for its October release date — in fact, it won’t be available until next year.

David Jaffe, co-founder of Eat Sleep Play, the developer behind Twisted Metal, made the announcement in a post on the European Playstation Blog today. The reason? “We’re just not ready.”

Gotta love the honesty.

Jaffe goes on to explain that Twisted Metal needs more development — more polish, more work, more love. “Thing is, you gotta trust me when I tell you that – with this extra time for tuning and polish – the game is going to be so much better than it already is,” he writes.

This is the kind of delay that actually doesn’t hurt. Jaffe’s candor is nice and his honesty is better; nobody wants a Twisted Metal title to come out half-baked just because there’s an arbitrary release date for it. And while the Eat Sleep Play exec goes on to say that he thinks Twisted Metal is pretty solid as-is, and that preview builds at events like E3 (where we played it) have received really great feedback, the developer wants Twisted Metal to become “a multiplayer classic.”

“We plan to ship the best Twisted Metal ever made. We plan to convert a lot of folks who think vehicle combat is a relic best left to 90′s nostalgia,” he writes.

Yeah, okay.

He finishes by saying we should expect Twisted Metal in early 2012, with more details to come…later.
