Posted on January 21, 2014, Mike Sharkey Two Classic Genres Meet in To The Death
Todd Alderman and Francesco Gigliotti left Respawn Entertainment to form their own studio, Scary Mostro, and To The Death is their first project. It melds beat ‘em ups with shoot ‘em ups, it’s currently in playable prototype, and Scary Mostro is seeking $400,000 on Kickstarter to complete and publish it independently.
Featuring single-player, co-op, and competitive multiplayer, To The Death tells the tale of two warriors who killed one another but continue their eternal battle in another realm called The Crawl.
And it looks like fun. I grew up on arcade beat-’em-ups, and I’d love to see how something like Dungeons & Dragons: Tower of Doom plays at the pace of a shoot ‘em up like Raiden.
Also nice to see a prototype in action. Too often with Kickstarter projects, potential contributors are asked to imagine what the game could eventually look like.
If Scary Mostro hits its Kickstarter goal, To The Death is penciled in for a spring 2015 release on PC (with stretch goals that would bring it to consoles).
As a side note: I can’t believe no one has used the name To The Death in a game before.
