In an interview with CVG, Ubisoft has explained why Assassin’s Creed 3 will be the largest game in the series and revealed that we will experience more Desmond than ever before.

When discussing this sequel’s story, lead writer Matt Turner said:

All I can say about Desmond’s story is you’re going to experience more Desmond than you’ve ever had before. We’re spending more time on the present than we have in past games. It’s a big part of our story and I don’t really want to give too many details away because I want people to experience what that is. But rest assured, you’re going to see a lot of Desmond. More so than in any past game.

To be honest, I always found the past eras the most compelling, so this decision concerns me. But maybe this focus on the present will win me over.

Turner went on to discuss the immense scope of the game:

Our goal is a lofty one and to do that you need time and people. Basically when we set our sights that high we realised we needed to arm ourselves with the tools to accomplish that. It’s one thing to say ‘we want to make the best game we’ve ever made’, and another to actually do it.

We started with a huge development window which allows two-to-three years to get it done, then the next step was capacity. We have actually twice the amount of resources we’ve ever had before on Assassin’s Creed. That’s allowing us the ability to create a bigger world and create something on a scale that we haven’t reached before.

You heard yesterday the frontier map is 1.5 times the size of AC: Brotherhood’s Rome – and that’s just one map. The scale of the game is huge and that comes from people and time.

Sounds like an ambitious project; is AC3 shaping up to be something you’re looking forward to?
