With the title’s launch days away, Ubisoft has confirmed that Far Cry 3 will not support dedicated servers.

Ubisoft community manager MSV-Vextor posted the following message on the publisher’s official forums:

“The online experience does not support dedicated servers.”

This means servers will be hosted locally, with the hosting player gaining the tremendous advantage of having 0 ping, and all other players being at the mercy of the host’s internet connection — a nail in the coffin for any kind of serious, competitive play.

It should be noted that Far Cry 2 also launched without dedicated servers from Ubisoft, but third-parties later hosted dedicated servers in an unofficial capacity.
