After having teased the game in the months leading up to E3, Ubisoft’s decision not to show anything related to Rainbow 6: Patriots was a bit odd. No explanation was given for the absence which only seemed stranger considering they did show off a bit from next installment their other upcoming Tom Clancy-branded cash cow, Splinter Cell: Blacklist. Speculation was that it might even be cancelled. So what gives?

As it turns out, it’s because they want to make sure the game is ready. Speaking to IGN, Ubisoft’s Tony Key confirmed the game is still being developed. That’s great, since Jean-Sebastien Decant, designer of Heavy Rain, is now on the project (really, the first thing that made me even remotely interested in it). However, it’s really not ready, and it was decided it would be better to pull it from E3 than cobble something together just to make a cursory appearance. “What we decided,” Key said, “was that the best thing for the brand was to not bring it to the show right now.”

There’s also the fact, as Key noted, that Ubisoft had a huge amount of games at E3 and didn’t need to show off Rainbow 6. But we’ll just stop and contemplate the idea that a major developer opted to let a game develop at its own pace rather than crack a whip to get it out on an arbitrary schedule. It kind of hurts to see them treating something as turgid as a Tom Clancy game with more reverence than certain other developers I could mention treated an enduring classic. Hopefully, the final game won’t be the pro-99% propaganda it looked like in the original trailer.
