Posted on March 21, 2014, Mike Sharkey Ubisoft Shows Off its New Snowdrop Engine
We’ve seen Ubisoft’s new Snowdrop Engine create one seriously impressive recreation of New York City for the upcoming open-world shooter, The Division. As a new trailer reveals, Snowdrop is just as adept at trees, ferns, and rocks as it is at concrete and steel.
In their GDC video promoting Snowdrop and the studio creating it, Massive Entertainment, Ubisoft offers an inside look at its new engine. There are a few new shots of The Division, but it’s the huge landscape scenes that pique my curiosity:
The forest and landscape scenes are likely just materials created specifically to show off Snowdrop’s power and juxtapose the city scenes. But I can’t help but wonder if they’re actually assets being used on another big project. Massive has worked on the Assassin’s Creed series as well as Far Cry 3 in the past, so we could be getting a sneak peak at something new.
Regardless, Snowdrop is an impressive piece of software.
