Ubisoft has announced its plans to develop and publish a game based on James Cameron’s upcoming movie, “Avatar,” from 20th Century Fox. The film’s story will revolve around an ex-Marine who finds himself on an alien planet in the middle of a conflict. He becomes an “Avatar,” that is, a human mind trapped in an alien body; and he must struggle with his own survival as well as that of the indigenous people. The movie’s special effects will be handled by WETA Digital, known for their work on The Lord of the Rings Trilogy and King Kong, as well as the upcoming Halo movie; so you can expect the visual side of things to be amazing. According to James Cameron:
“For the movie ‘Avatar’ we are creating a world rich in character, detail, conflict and cultural depth. It has the raw material for a game that the more demanding gamers of today will want to get their hands on — one that is rich in visuals and ideas, and challenging in play. I told the Ubisoft team I wanted them to be free to do their very best work, and not think of this as a movie-based game. They responded with a fully realized presentation which captured the soul of the world and the characters, while promising to be a knockout game on its own terms. Their passion inspired my confidence that they are going to do something transcendental.”
When the director of “Terminator,” “Aliens,” “The Abyss,” and “Titanic” says he’s making a movie after over a decade since his last film was released, it’s a big deal. Therefore, the game game based on said movie should also be a big deal. And when the director of those movies says the game looks great, that means this is something to definitely look forward to on its own.
