It appears Ubisoft is preparing to bring back SSI’s turn-based wargame franchise, Steel Panthers.

Ubisoft acquired popular 1990s PC games maker Strategic Simulations, Inc. back in 2001, retired the name, and for years did nothing with its many franchises. Then last year Ubisoft announced that it was developing free-to-play versions of Silent Hunter and Panzer General. Now it looks like Ubisoft is gearing up to do much the same with Steel Panthers.

Yesterday, Ubisoft filed a trademark with the US Patent and Trademark Office for Steel Panthers. Here’s the description:

“Game software and electronic game programs, namely, software games recorded on CD-ROM and digital video discs for computers; software games recorded on CD-ROMs, digital video discs, and cartridges for console and individual portable gaming systems; electronic game software for mobile and cellular phones, personal digital assistants, wireless devices, personal computers, home video game consoles, and handheld electronic devices; Downloadable electronic game software for use on mobile and cellular phones, handheld computers, personal computers, home video game consoles used with televisions and arcade-based video game consoles; Downloadable computer game software via a global computer network and wireless devices; Computer game programmes downloadable via the Internet.”

The original Steel Panthers was published in 1995 and featured turn-based tank gameplay on a hexagonal map. Two official sequels from SSI followed, with Steel Panthers 3: Brigade Command launching in 1997. Since then, the brand has gone dormant, with only the modders at Camo Workshop cranking out Steel Panthers mods. Most recently,  Camo Workshop released Steel Panthers: Main Battle Tank in 2006.

We’ve reached out to Ubisoft for details and further information on the Steel Panthers trademark filing and will update this post with any response.
