Lightspeed Studios, renowned for their collaboration on the popular game PUBG Mobile, has teamed up with Hollywood superstar Will Smith for an upcoming free-to-play open-world survival shooter called Undawn. While this unexpected partnership raises some eyebrows, it also piques curiosity about what this new venture into video games may lead to.
Will Smith needs no introduction, having starred in a number of box office and television hits over the years, with numerous accolades, including an Academy Award win and four nominations. His films have amassed a staggering $9 billion worldwide box office revenue. Despite a Fortnite cameo, Undawn surprisingly marks Smith's first significant video game role. Given his status, one might have anticipated Smith to lend his talents to a grandiose project akin to Keanu Reeves as Johnny Silverhand in Cyberpunk 2077 or Liam Neeson's character in Fallout 3. Furthermore, the Call of Duty franchise has seen its fair share of Hollywood actors in performance roles.
However, Undawn presents a different path for Smith, being his first foray into video games, in a free-to-play mobile shooter no less, although the game is also making its way to Steam. The juxtaposition is puzzling, but watching Smith, famous for his role in The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, silently take on menacing creatures wreaking havoc in his neighbourhood in the game's trailer is undeniably intriguing.
Details about the actual gameplay remain somewhat elusive. The official website entices visitors with myriad rewards for pre-registration, including consumables and various in-game currencies. On the other hand, the Steam page offers a clearer glimpse into the game mechanics, showcasing shooting, monstrous adversaries, resource gathering, base construction, and vehicular exploration. However, the footage's cluttered mobile game heads-up display (HUD) raises my concerns about the quality of the PC gaming experience.
While Undawn's world seems to suit Smith's persona, drawing some parallels to the 2007 film I Am Legend, there is a notable absence of dialogue from the actor in the game's trailer. Undawn was initially introduced as Dawn Awakening back in 2019. After years of anticipation, the free-to-play multiplayer survival game is set to launch on June 15 on mobile and PC.
