Bungie revealed today that the upcoming Destiny patch 1.0.2 will make several changes to the Cryptarch and Engram mechanics in an effort to address many criticisms lauded at the game’s loot drop system.

Once the new patch goes live next week, rare and legendary engrams will always decode to the color of the engram or higher. This means that a blue engram will always yield a rare or legendary piece of gear, while purple engrams will always yield legendary or exotic gear, along with a chance for rare materials. Bungie will also be increasing the chance that rare engrams will yield legendary gear.

The patch will also adjust the rewards for Daily Heroics, Weekly Heroics, and Vanguard: Tiger Playlists by adding rare and legendary engrams in addition to their current rewards.

This is a pretty big deal for Destiny players, because right now, the most efficient way of getting rare and legendary engrams is by standing in front of a cave and shooting into it for hours. Daily and weekly heroic missions are difficult and time consuming enough to warrant special rewards, but very rarely do.
