More exciting news from Valve today: The Bellvue, WA company has announced “Steam Machines,” a “powerful new category of living room hardware” that will run Valve’s just-announced Steam OS starting in 2014. The company promises “multiple Steam OS machines to choose from, made by different manufacturers,” and an “array of specifications, prices, and performance.”

The official announcement page is pretty to look at, but short of solid information. That said, there is one exciting bit: the prospect of a hardware beta that will allow enthusiastic users to get their hands on a prototype Steam Machine before the end of the year.

Enrollment is limited to 300 machines, so check out the steps below for information on how to make yourself eligible. As you’d expect, applicants are already flooding in by the thousands.

THE HARDWARE BETA ELIGIBILITY QUEST:
Before October 25, log in to Steam and then visit your quest page to track your current status towards beta test eligibility

  1. Join the Steam Universe community group
  2. Agree to the Steam Hardware Beta Terms and Conditions
  3. Make 10 Steam friends (if you haven’t already)
  4. Create a public Steam Community profile (if you haven’t already)
  5. Play a game using a gamepad in Big Picture mode

The official announcement page also has a lengthy FAQ that clears up some pressing questions without saying much. Credit to Valve, though for making the machines fully customizable and hackable. Curious gamers will also eventually be able to download the Steam OS source code.

Game Front’s own Mike Sharkey can take some well-deserved kudos for predicting a Valve hardware announcement back on Monday. Check back with us for more details on this story as they become available.
