Posted on April 13, 2012, Ross Lincoln Valve Hiring Hardware Engineers. So, Y’Know, Freak Out People.
Though Valve still refuses to confirm the existence of the c console gaming device they’re rumored to be working on, going so far as to almost deny it at GDC, people are fairly well convinced it’s a thing that is happening. And thanks to a cool find by Engadget, it’s looking more and more like people are right.
Valve has posted new jobs listing on their official site, and slipped in among the usual stuff like 3D Character Artist, Software Engineer—Game Audio and the like is two unusual new entries: Hardware Engineer—Electronics Engineer, and Hardware Engineer—Mechanical. So, yes, Valve is definitely working on some kind of proprietary hardware. But what, exactly, is it?
PC Gamer notes that job posting originally started with “For years, Valve has been all about writing software that provides great gameplay experiences. Now we’re developing hardware to enhance those experiences, and you can be a key part of making that happen.” That sentence has since been removed, leading me to wildly speculate that ZOMG THEY ARE COVERING UP THE FACT THAT THEY’RE WORKING ON AN ACTUAL PORTAL GUN!
I kid, I kid. But for reasons I can’t fathom, despite constant evidence to the contrary, Valve is going to continue to deny they’re making a console (the only reason I can think of for removing the “developing hardware” statement from the ad. Perhaps they want to troll people, or maybe they want to make the announcement on their terms. Here’s hoping if they do, it’s at E3. We’ll keep an eye out.
