By now, you’ve probably read a quote from a developer or two who experienced Valve’s VR Room demo at the Steam Dev Days Conference back in January. If not, Minecraft creator Markus “Notch” Persson shared his thoughts on Twitter yesterday:

I got to see Valve’s VR room as well, and it was better than bacon. Things are about to change, big time.

Notch is the latest in a lengthy list of devs to say they were floored by Valve’s virtual reality demonstration, and now the man who created it, Atman Binstock, is leaving Valve to become the Chief Architect for Oculus Rift.

Atman joined Valve just over two years ago to work on AR and VR, and in that time he was instrumental in pushing the tech forward.

Two years later, we’ve solved some of the basic problems, proven great VR is not only possible but truly magical, and now I want to bring it to the world,” Binstock said in a statement. “I’m incredibly excited and humbled by the opportunity — We’re just scratching the surface of what’s possible, and I can’t wait to discover what’s next!”

Binstock will lead Oculus’ new R&D team in Seattle, and if you’re an engineer looking to join the virtual party, head on over to the Oculus Careers page.

In related news, Oculus has announced that it has sold nearly every one of its 60,000 Oculus Rift developer kits. A handful of the components used to make the kits are no longer being sold, so that means Oculus will no longer be selling dev kits.

Next we see the Oculus Rift, it should be the consumer version of the headset. Stay tuned, we’re expecting to learn more at GDC 2014 next week.
