In yet more sad news for Australian game developers (following Team Bondi’s troubles and THQ’s studio closings there), it seems Visceral Studios’ Melbourne branch is sealing up. Electronic Arts has closed the doors of the studio according to a Twitter update from the International Game Developers’ Association, which meant the firing of 21 developers.

The studio was a small arm of the larger Visceral body, which is responsible for the Dead Space franchise. Kotaku apparently has been talking to an anonymous source with the Melbourne studio, who told the site that it has been working on a AAA console game for something like the last three years. As the source tells it, EA’s Game Label VP put the kibosh on the game and the studio after deciding it wouldn’t be profitable.

Visceral’s Melbourne studio previously has done work on Dead Space, Dante’s Inferno and Godfather 2.
